Motorola SLVR L6 - Driver pack for the Mac

As a Christmas present for all Mac users with a cool new Motorola L6 phone, I'm publishing some open source drivers for it. You can now use iSync (sychronizing) and Address Book (sending SMS).

http://www.david-reitter.com/software/l6.html

Thanks to John Moose and Derek Hellmons for their essential tips, and to Marco Wilka for his sms_send utility.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can you e-mail me drivers for Windows?
A: No, I'm sorry I can't. I don't have them, and I'm not aware of any free drivers that I could legally send you. You should turn to Motorola or your network provider to support your phone.

Q: Do you have a driver for the Motorola L7 (SLVR)?
A: Yes, this is in the works. I bought an L7 recently and I have made it work with Address Book. There is, however, an issue to be resolved when multiple phones with Bluetooth Modem capabilities have been installed on the machine. As my L7 has been stolen since, I'm unable to work on this. Sorry! (The L7 is already supported by iSync (latest OS X version) without a driver.)

Q: I'm looking for Motorola XXX driver which can help me connect my L7 to my laptop. Would you mind to email me its driver?

A: If I had written a driver for XXX, I would put it online here or sell it to you via this web site. I don't write a driver an keep hidden from the world on my hard disk, just to send it to people via e-mail. I understand that you might be despeate for a driver -- but I'm sorry, I can't help you unless you need iSync/Address Book support for your L6. I cannot support you individually, because I'm very busy with my work, my ex-girlfriend, my hobby and Aquamacs Emacs. Of course, you can offer me lots of money (that always helps), but I don't recall anyone do that :-)

Q: Where can I download USB drivers?
A: Most Macs come with Bluetooth nowadays, or you can simply get a cheap Bluetooth USB dongle. That's what I would do. The L7 seems to be supported in the latest OS X versions via USB. For Windows, check out this link (no warranty for this - I haven't tested the software.).

Q: Where can I download drivers for Windows?
A: Check out this link (no warranty for this - I haven't tested the software.).

Q: I keep getting "Resource busy" errors when I try to send a text message from within Address Book.
A: This is a known bug. I don't have the time to fix this right now, sorry.

Cool nice gift david.

I was thinking about buying one of those L7 models. Is there any way to change your driver so that I could isync the L7? I'm not very fluent in programming, but i could try to do it, if it's not that difficult...

Btw, greetings from Brazil : )

Posted by: Edu at December 28, 2005 12:45 PM

I wanted to add support for my V3x, so I changed the id to 0x22b8/0x3002 and the names to RAZRV3x.
But isync only says no support.

Have i forgotten something?

PS: i've copied the dirs to my pers. Library-dir

Posted by: Lars Schmohl at January 5, 2006 7:43 PM

Hi David. pardon my ignorance but I downloaded your drivers and it opened a text file with a bunch of code. Is there someplace I need to paste the code? What am I doing incorrectly? I love my new phone and I'd hate to return it just because I can't get it to sync. thanks for your help.

Posted by: komal at January 6, 2006 3:29 AM

Figured out the problem. The plug-in works great! Thanks!

Posted by: komal at January 7, 2006 12:30 AM

Thanks for these - great, since it's a great phone.

However I've followed your instructions, copying both directories to the system-wide Library AND my user area Library folders, to no avail - iSync still reports the L6 as 'unsupported' and gets no further than identifying the model. Anyone got any pointers that could help me out - much appreciated...

Posted by: nick at January 10, 2006 1:16 PM

did you restart iSync?
The plugin should only be installed once.

Where is your phone from?

Posted by: David Reitter at January 10, 2006 3:09 PM

hi - yes I even tried rebooting the machine, and copying the folder contents into an existing folder (in my user area Library folder) called just 'Phones' which seemed to be there.

I've just done a Software Update so I'll see what happens now.
Thanks...

Posted by: nick at January 10, 2006 5:00 PM

aha.. a system software update seems to have solved it. It now works fine - thanks very much indeed.

Posted by: nick at January 10, 2006 5:53 PM

hey,

i found your drivers via google..is there any way this will work with the L7 too? If there is it would be great as I dont want to have to enter all my contacts manualy. Thanks

Posted by: Rob Oxley at January 11, 2006 6:57 PM

Rob, yes, I have an experimental driver for the L7. Didn't receive any contributions to the driver development, so I couldn't be bothered working on that... Maybe I'll put it online some time. (I don't have an L7 myself, so that's why it's experimental...)

Posted by: David Reitter at January 11, 2006 8:23 PM

David, great thing you are doing here. Tried to get the drivers to work with my L7 but no luck, it recognises the phone but wont talk. It should be ok using bluetooth connectivity rather than USB?

Also could you let me know if you plan on putting the L7 driver up soon? You may have not recieved any contributions from L6 owners but that doesnt say us L7 users arnt more generous.

Thanks

HI ALL!!!

Is there a way of getting pictures and video clips off the L6 in OSX, or do I have to use a Motorola App under Virtual PC?

Thx.

Posted by: Duncan Craig at January 13, 2006 6:19 PM

is there info about how to derive the id for a L7, and an explenation for how to homebrew the plugin?

i too cannot get past the scanning for devices. it finds the phone (L6) but says it's unsupported. i'm running 10.4.4. if anyone can help me get this working i'd greatly appreciate it.

Posted by: dryan at January 20, 2006 10:05 PM

well i spoke too soon. after digging around inside the isync files i figured out how to get it working. thanks for the help. i'm off to donate.

Posted by: dryan at January 20, 2006 10:43 PM

gaah. i'm having no luck with this. i'm assuming it's because i'm using 10.3.9?

a difficult choice awaits me ... upgrade my OS, or send back the phone :o

Can I isync a Tiger 10.4 and a Motarolla V3x ?

I cant seem to make it work with thte nova media plugins and my mac does not have bluetooth.

Please help!

Tim

Posted by: tim at February 9, 2006 3:24 PM

Duncan, use Bluetooth Exchange to download pictures or upload ringtones (e.g. MP3)

Posted by: David at February 11, 2006 9:41 AM

Thanks David for your work on this. Being able to use the L6 with iSync is great.

Has anyone else had issues with not getting addresses to transfer to the phone? Names and numbers transfer fine but street address info gets ignored. I read on Apple's forums that it is possibly because of German firmware (ie. most people in the US, like me, are getting their phones on ebay and this may be where they are coming from). Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Posted by: jef at February 13, 2006 5:07 AM

Will the Motorola L2 also be supported? I assume that there are very little differences to the L6, so it shouldn't be too hard to do.
Maybe I will just try to change the sourcecode myself when I get that phone.
By the way.. Does this driver sync the pictures in the adressbook too?

Posted by: Valentin at February 17, 2006 12:30 PM

I would like to help you developing the SLVR L7 drivers, i've got one of those in spain and there is no way to sync it with bluetooth.
Macosx 10.4.5

Posted by: Crak Otaku at February 22, 2006 4:37 PM

Great Phone. Great little app that works. Thanks for being able to sync it and BT file Exchange Utility also works like charm.
One problem though... when using the addressbook and trying to send a SMS I get the following message : error opening serial port /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem - Resource busy(16). Addressbook does however copy the sms into the note section.

Help!

Any news about a Tool for the L7? I would be soo great!

Posted by: unclebenz at March 8, 2006 3:05 PM

unclebenz, I'd be happy to bundle up a driver if I knew the trick. The only way to find out myself would be to actually have one of these phones in front of me. If someone is willing to buy me one, please go ahead. I'd do my best to produce a driver (no promises possible). My address is here.

hi there,

i recently bought moto L6 cell and i have data access cable as well but i m not able to find the drivers for windows.

can u help me

Posted by: amit at March 16, 2006 3:46 PM

Hi,

I have dragged the files to my Library folder but nothing happens. I have updated my system (10.3.9), and restarted.

The problem may actually lie in the pairing, when I set up the L6 as a phone it does not actually slect me select the option use with isync. It only allows me to select dial up networking.

I would be most grateful for any help

Thanks...

Posted by: Eric at April 3, 2006 9:21 PM

looked inside phonebook and calender, all my contact names are a bunch of numbers. Calender event names are also in a bunch of numbers. Any Solutions?

Posted by: Eric at April 3, 2006 9:23 PM

Eric: this is strange. A lot of people have synced successfully with these drivers using OS X 10.4.x. It sounds like your OS version doesn't support the encoding, or the encoding has been changed in a new or older version of the L6.
I would try again after upgrading to 10.4.5. It's unlikely that any other driver solution for the L6 would do its job if my tentative diagnosis is right.

Had a V3 and it worked great as a bluetooth modem, but didn't sync well and then I left it in a cab. No suprise it didn't make it to Lost Property... Just got an L7 and it works beautifully with iSync, but not as a modem...

It does, however, mount as a removeable device in OSX which means I'm off to try loading Knoppix on it so I can boot my computer at work from it and be in Linux instead of Windoze!

Posted by: j1mmyd at May 4, 2006 1:28 PM

Will the Motorola L2 also work?

Posted by: paolo at May 4, 2006 2:44 PM

Hi,

I just upgraded to Tiger, just so that I could get my new L6 to sync. I program on this machine for a living, so this upgrade was over a 20 hour process to get everything right. I installed David's L6 drivers, and performed a sync with iSync. The Address Book info did transfer successfully, however, with one REALLY pesky glitch. If a contact has more than one piece of information, say, for instance, home and work telephone numbers, the contact ends up being listed twice in the L6's phone book, one entry containing the contact's work number, and one containing the contact's home number. With many contacts possessing five or six different entries, the phone book in the L6 has become pretty unweildy. Is this expected, a bug, or something that I am doing wrong? If I could provide any technical assistance in working this out, I'd be happy to play my part!

Thanks!

Posted by: steveyup at May 11, 2006 3:36 PM

steveyup, I believe that's due to the way the L6 displays its phone book - it's not really a matter of syncing. Maybe there's an option to configure this?

Is there something I can do about this? A setting or a code? Sumit, what is USD?

If you mean USB, read the FAQ above. Besides, I didn't need a USB driver - I just plugged it in and that was it, for up/downloading MP3s etc etc. For iSync and Address Book, I wrote the drivers that I offer on this site.

If you're still using Windows, consider getting a better computer running Mac OS X...

I've read that some people are able to use you program to use an L2 with isync. I loaded the items from the download but when I try to pair with isync it says Motorola L2 and then device not supported. Is there another trick? I'd gladly donate $$ for a working sync with my L2 and Mac. Thanks.

Hi!

I just found your site and I was wondering if it's possible to create a driver for any (non iSync mobile phone) I actually own 3 mobiles phones (2 are iSync compatible: V3 and Nokia 6680) but 1 of them isn't Samsung D820.

Is it possible to make it iSync with my iMac?

Thanks

In response to Jodi Duddington's message of June 1:

I can't solve your problem, Jodi, but I can at least diagnose it: The "strange and useless jumble of numbers and letters" you are seeing is hexadecimal code representing the ASCII values of the letters in the names of your contacts. So for example, if you have a friend named "Ron", his name will show up on your phone as "526F6E". Each pair of character represents one character in his name.

I know this because the same thing is happening with my L2. I have no idea how to fix it.

By the way, I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 on an eMac.

I hope this post is not considered off-topic, since it doesn't contain any rude and ungrammatical requests for David to email me custom software.

I was able to achieve an isynch with the Motorola L6 for the address book without your drivers (? recent mac isynch update?) but there were problems with the field labels - little other than the first phone number appeared and the single name field contained first name last name no matter how I arranged address book.
I installed your drivers but this has made no difference.
Any suggestions? Thanks - Simon Bowler

When my L6 is paired with a bluetooth hands-free headset (tried Motorola H500 and Samsung WEP200), it looses the ability to play mp3 ringtones and music. Same problem when I tried the bluetooth headset on my friend's L7.
Anyone experiencing same problem and any solution?

Hi, I changed the script to:

		copy replace_chars(phone_string, " ", "") to phone_string
		copy replace_chars(phone_string, "(", "") to phone_string
		copy replace_chars(phone_string, ")", "") to phone_string
		copy replace_chars(phone_string, "-", "") to phone_string

...

do shell script ((quoted form of (scriptPath & "sms_send")) & " -n '" & phone_string & "' -t " & quoted form of replace_chars(sms_string, "\"", "\\\""))

single quotes around the output number.

and now it works. The L6 phoneplugin was rejected by iSync

"Q: Do you have a driver for the Motorola L7 (SLVR)?
A: Yes, this is in the works. I bought an L7 recently and I have made it work with Address Book. There is, however, an issue to be resolved when multiple phones with Bluetooth Modem capabilities have been installed on the machine"

It's all good man, I just have one phone through bluetooth and all I want is for it to work with Address Book, does anyone have this script?? I'll pay via pay-pal!!!

Yes, Blake, you can send texts with the Address Book plugin. In fact it should work with a lot of phones.

Posted by: Cody Jaski at June 6, 2007 9:16 PM

Hey Dave :)

Thanks for all the info, as well as those custom scripts!

There's a problem with the SLVR L7 + Mac OS X via USB that seems very frequent, although there is no apparent fix (nor clear answers) all over the net:

My phone was working perfectly well with iSync, and my memory card would appear with no fuss in the finder.

A couple of days ago, I switched SIM cards. Since then, when I plug my phone with USB into my iBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.9, iSync takes ages on "Connecting", and does not connect, and my phone doesn't appear, whatever I do, in Finder.

"Default Connection" has always been set to "Memory Card" in the USB setting on my phone. The problem arose suddenly, with no apparent reason, and since then, not a chance to connect my phone to my laptop.

Is there something I might have missed here?

Thanks!

HELP! I tried to use this to sync my contacts with my phone and instead of contacts going from computer to phone, this is what happened: (1) The few numbers I had on my phone to begin with were copied to my AddressBook (2) NO Address Book contacts were moved TO my phone (3) All the phone numbers listed in entries in the group I was trying to sync to my phone were DELETED from the Address Book cards! (ie, I had a group of contacts I wanted to sync, and in each contact card, all phone numbers were erased.)

As you can imagine that made me severely upset... Please help me to get this application working correctly. chbolt [at] wm (dot) edu
