The new Motorola SLVR L6 cell phone - a quick review

Sheesh. It's slim! No more bulge in my pants where there shouldn't be one - you don't even feel the cell phone there! The flattest phone yet comes with a nice-enough color display, a keypad that mostly works for me and an extra key on each side, which can be freely assigned to menu functions. Needless to say, the phone works well as a phone: the sound is nice and clear, and when it goes off, it's loud enough. Only the vibration is a little too smooth to be easily noticed, but I guess that's owed to the lightness of the device. (It's tri-band GSM, by the way.)12682_MotImage.jpg

Navigating the menus doesn't take ages - I was worried that the phone would be as slow as the last Motorola I had a few years ago (the T720). Only scrolling through the phonebook is a tad slow, I'd say. Motorola allows you to compose a menu of shortcuts to get to specific menu items more quickly, that is, with two keystrokes only.

What's cool is that the L6 comes with a standard USB plug - not a proprietary one that'll require me to spend lots of money on accessories. I can simply plug it into my laptop to recharge - a huge benefit when I'm travelling, since I can leave the house without the charger.

Bluetooth is fast and easy and allows me to put a few MP3s on the phone -- but not really in order to listen to them (no headphone plug and only 10MB memory - that's enough for only 7 songs if they're low-quality). What's cool is that you can put your own ringtones on the phone rather than stupid beepy ringtones that you have to pay for. Remember the special ringtone they used at CTU in the American action series 24? You can download that and just upload it to the phone, on the Mac via Bluetooth Exchange. Any sound on the phone can be used as ringtone or for incoming text messages, alarms etc.

The built-in camera takes snapshots in low quality (< 1 Megapixel, VGA) even when it's darker outside like here in Scotland - all in all, nothing to phone home about. The ability to record little movies is neat.

The phone is missing a few essentials software-wise, such as a timer that helps me remember things on the stove. But that's not really a problem, since it runs standard J2ME Java software, which you can download and install (on the Mac, just drag'n'drop the .jar file to a running Bluetooth Exchange in the Dock!).

So much for the fun side - let's talk about work. Of course, the phone has a calendar and a contacts database (with the phone numbers). But what good are these if you cannot sync them easily with your computer? On the Mac, iSync is the tool of choice for syncing devices, and it's a grave disadvantage at this point that you cannot sync your Mac Address Book and the iCal calendars with the phone: iSync is lacking the right driver. Also, Address Book cannot send text messages via Bluetooth - bummer! (Update: I've made my own drivers for iSync and Address Book available.) There is a little free command-line tool which manages to send text messages with the L6. BluePhoneElite works as well ($20). Salling Clicker is a tool that allows you to use your Bluetooth phone as a remote control during presentations, e.g. in order to advance slides in a Powerpoint presentation. It's a little problematic with the L6: you have to pretend that it's a "Sony Ericsson W600i Cingular" phone and then install the Java Midlet on the phone.

The L6 is a brand-new phone and clearly needs polishing in terms of software. For instance, you'd like to be able to easily check the time, by just looking at the display. Flip phones sometimes have an extra display on the outside that would show the time and some status info. The L6 doesn't show anything, and when you press a key while the keypad is locked (i.e. the phone was in your pocket!), it'll show a reminder about how to unlock the keypad instead of time and date.

The logical next step for such a phone would be to supply a Bluetooth stack for audio, so I can use the phone as a phone together with my laptop and voice-over-IP software like Skype. But I guess I'm day-dreaming.

All in all, if you need a good-looking, lightweight, flexible phone and not a whole mobile office with lots of bells and whistles, the Motorola L6 is highly recommended. As Aidan says in a sexist comment about the L6: "It's wafer thin, head turningly gorgeous, but also useless and not the most brightest of things. In a nutshell, its not big, its not clever, it just sits on my lap and looks pretty." Multimedia freaks without a real iPod who would like a less-crappy camera are better off waiting for the feature-packaged L7 model.

In the UK, the L6 is sold for only £90 by Virgin (without a contract, but with £35 in airtime vouchers) - a bargain for what is offered. If you register with them in the UK, call them on 0845 6000 668 and tell them it's all my fault, giving them my name (David Reitter), my mobile number (07910 305589) and my post code (EH3 7PT) because they'll then give me freebies, and I like freebies!

ive just got one of these phones, and it didnt come with a usb or a cd, i found a USB that was the right size but im unable install it on my PC because i dont have a CD or any software for it, any idea where i might come across this??
help would be muchly eppreciated

Have you tried putting other tones on your L6? That's exactly what I want to do as the tones it comes with are dreadful.

I, too, use Macs but when I try to do it using bluetooth, the phone tells me that the file is not recognised, even though I'm doing it just the way it says I'm supposed to.

Advice gratefully received.

Posted by: Simon at December 29, 2005 11:43 PM

Simon, MP3 sounds work just fine. WAV isn't recognized.

Posted by: David Reitter at December 30, 2005 09:54 AM

Has anyone else tried the fix recommended by Derek above? I followed the instructions, but Apple wouldn't let me save the file as a .plist and forced it to default to an OmniOutline file. I tried syncing anyway and it didn't work. Any help out there?

Posted by: Komal at January 6, 2006 03:49 AM

david's plug-in worked like a charm. i recommend that instead of the fix above.

Posted by: komal at January 7, 2006 12:32 AM

Somehow the sms-function does not work with my address-book app (using 10.4.4). This message pops up: Error opening serial port /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem - Resource busy(16).: ..text...
iSync and file-transfer worked great! I once tried sending sms via a nokia 6021 which worked great, too.
Any help?

Posted by: Christian at January 22, 2006 05:17 PM

Christian, you can't have several Bluetooth connections open at the same time. Do not click the Bluetooth button in Address Book before sending.

Posted by: David Reitter at January 23, 2006 08:36 AM

Well, still the same - what do you mean with "Several Bluetooth connections"? Can I switch on Bluetooth in the menuebar but keep it off in the addressbook? That's what you mean, right?

Posted by: Christian at January 23, 2006 01:09 PM

just wanted to know iwe have this hpone without any software found a usb to fit but comp says no device found. my other motorola i have no probs with v975. i would love to be ale to download music onto it and stoore my photos on comp any ideas

Posted by: flashtwinkle at January 23, 2006 02:04 PM

any ideas on how to get the software for the l6 as i would like to put photos nto compuetr and download music onto phone thanks

Posted by: flashtwinkle at January 23, 2006 02:05 PM

Christian, just don't run any other programs accessing the device. BT should be on (menu bar), but don't have Bluetooth Exchange open at the same time, and don't activate BT in the Address Book when you want to send SMS. The plugin runs its own BT connection. If that still doesn't work, I don't know what the trouble is. Works fine for me and many others..

Posted by: David Reitter at January 23, 2006 05:27 PM

flashtwinkle, Bluetooth Exchange comes with OS X and works great with the L6 - provided you don't have a crap provider. Some US providers seem to deactivate a lot of connectivity functions, including the ones you mention.
I download pictures off the phone all the time, and I have an MP3 (self-recorded!) as a ring tone.

Posted by: David Reitter at January 23, 2006 05:29 PM

Thanx David - but although there is now other bluetooth connection/application open it doesn't work. Still reporting the old error...Maybe the old bluetooth connection i tried once with a nokia is still written somewhere in the preferences and "blocking" a new connection?
Anyway, i tried sailing clicker - that's so cool! Only the phone battery isn't happy :-)! Thank you for your workarounds!

Hi David, thanks for your contribution to the motorola syncing problems. Can you please explain more detailed how you managed to connect the L6 with salling clicker? I followed the instructions and tried to "disguise" the L6 as a SE w600i. But sc always tries to connect to a motorola L6 and gives an error. Can you please help?
Thanks Michael

Posted by: Michael Walsdorff at February 5, 2006 01:59 AM

I too get the busy port error when trying to send an sms via Address Book. I'm disappointed that the phone isn't natively supported for this feature, but David'd fix gave me hope. It looks like it certainly should work, but something is off. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, if you can take paypal I'd love to send a few bucks for your great contribution to fellow Mac users!

Posted by: Dan at February 5, 2006 03:36 AM

Folks,
I was getting that "device busy" error as well the other day - just when I had left my phone in another room. So I reckon that either the Bluetooth connection doesn't work, or that you haven't paired your phones and computers. Could that be the problem?

Dan, my Paypal accounts are david.reitter at gmail.com (for direct transfers - preferred) and dr at davids-welt.de (for credit/debit card payments).

Also would i be able to use my PSP usb cable for my L6 , it fits perfectly but i dont have the disk. Any Advice?

I just bought an L6. It didn't come with a USB or CD. I found a USB the right size but when I try to set it up for transferring MP3 files from my PC to my L6 I'm told that I need some software. Does anyone know if there's a free way to get past this problem?

Any help appreciated.

Posted by: Paul Diamond at February 10, 2006 11:45 PM

Liz, I suspect you didn't put the plugins in the right places. (You also need to restart iSync.)

Carl: yes, if it's a standard USB cable. You don't need a disk (provided you have a Mac). Just use my drivers.

Paul, is that a Mac or just Windows? If it's a Mac, use Bluetooth Exchange - that comes with the system.

Posted by: David at February 11, 2006 09:41 AM

Unfortunately I dont have a Mac, thats my problem... Any other advice what I could do without having to buy one of those Plug into USB Bluetooth Gadget things lol (Excuse my lack of knowledge when it comes to these things)

I borrowed my sisters phonetools V3 disk and updated the phonetools thing as much as it would and it still wouldnt find my L6.

PC Users, XP Folks, i have tried my L6 with USB cable, it runs with Mobile Phone Tools 3.0 or 3.23 (wich i found in emule.... you know..), i have installed it and when XP ask me for the location of the controller/driver i choose to install it manually from the data.cab file, and IT WORKS, but only for MP3 music images videos notebooks sms, but it doesn't work for JAVA applications like games and other funny stuff like that. If somebody knows.. please report it.

Ahhhhh a good and free page for little games but good ones in JAR and JAD, its russian i don't understand but its easy to download games FREE:

Hi ok i USE XP & i want to get songs on my phone like 50 other diffrent ppl Now I WANT TO GET SOME MUSIC ON MY PHONE so please help

Posted by: Haydies at March 19, 2006 04:06 PM

Lauren, if you have a Mac, it's already included with your operating system. The utility is called "Bluetooth File Exchange" and that's all you need. It's in /Applications/Utilities, I think. Or use the Bluetooth icon in the upper right screen corner if it's set up (System Preferences).

If you're a Windows user, I can't help (sorry Haydies).

Posted by: David Reitter at March 20, 2006 12:49 AM

you will need motorola phone tools program (get on ebay for about 3GBP), update to latest version, there wont be an L6 driver, but as above, the V3 driver works fine and allows transfer of pictures, mp3 music etc through a standard mini- USB cable, easily.
hope that helps
Neil

Posted by: neil at March 21, 2006 09:37 PM

I found the P2K USB Drivers (Both Win XP & 98 Drivers Included):
http://bongowireless.com/file_download.php

and then installed the Phone Tools 3.23:

(Requires WinRar)
http://rapidshare.de/files/3221238/Moto_3.23.rar.html

And then updated Phone Tools (live update) and selected the 'V3' model (the L6 is not listed). The file (Multimedia Studio) transfer works ... but not the calendar and phone book sync.

Cheers!

Hi there! great site!
I have a few questions:
a) How do you change the PTT button (the one on the left) to another function?
b) Is there any way of keeping the outbox sms in the SIM card, not in the phone?
c) Is there any way of making the "Delivery report" of the sms a YES always? So far, I see that you have to put the "YES" in EACH sms you send...
d) Is it possible to modify the volume of the music and videos? How?
e) If I have a handheld device (like a Palm) with Bluetooth, would it be possible to send an sms from the Palm, by using BT?
Thanks a lot!

Windows XP users!

To get stuff to your L6
Download Phonetools.....update to the latest version. Manually setup a new phone, when they ask you to plug in your phone, unplug it, and replug it. Set the phone under model Motorola V3, because the L6 is unavailable. The phonetools interface looks like the Razr. From there you can put your pics and mp3s.
Your must update phonetools to transfer mp3s, otehrwise they wil tell you something about codec unavailable. Phonetools and the USB cable is all you need.

Posted by: Czer at June 1, 2006 06:03 AM

if you want to down load stuff off your phone, and upload mp3's and stuff, heres what you have to do.

1. go here http://bongowireless.com/file_download.php
and down load the pk2 usb drivers, shis shouldnt take long.

2.then go here http://rapidshare.de/files/3221238/Moto_3.23.rar.html

and down load phone tools 3.23

(note, you must have win rar installed befor doing this)

3.then install the p2k drivers
4.then install phone tools 3.23
5.after doing all of this, restart you computer, with your motorola plugged into the usb drive, and it should come up with a pop up, saying something like 'new hardware found'or something ;)

6.If no po[p up comes up, then just double click on phone tools on your desk top, and it will ask you to configure your phone or something. you then follow the steps.
7.if it doesnt automatically find your phone, the just wait until it tells you to manually do it. Then just choose the right options ( not too hard to figure out on your own)

then once that is done, it will ask you to chose a phone model, seeing L6 isnt there, just choose the V3. Then just wait until it all loads

(please excuse me if i got some of this info wron, its been a while since i did my own, Cya's ;) )

Hi all!

Hey, I see lots of you are using Motorola version 3.23 or 3.28, but I have downloaded from the net (torrent) -free, of course- the version 4.04c, which has the skin for Motorola L6 (I don't have to use the V3), and it works good! Cheers!

hello guys,i hv bought the same motorola cell L6.and i also hv a original cd too.its a great fun to use the software u can dowmload r.tons, imag, and more.but the most interesting feature is the internet,u can directly run internet on your PC via GPRS by connecting ur cell with a USB cord.its very fast then the normal land line phone connection.
i would like to share my software with you ,but its a copyright protected.i dont know how to send it on net.mr.admin.can i show my e-mail add here?
thanks rash.

Posted by: rash at July 1, 2006 06:33 PM

I'm puzzled as to which to buy; the L6 or the L2. I don't need a camera, and the lightening spaces of the L6 are not good to me. On the contrary, the L2 doesn't have a camera, and its keypad is bulging a bit, making for easier typing.

My only concern is: does the L2's keypad produce annoying/loud plastic-like clicks on pressing? It would be terrible if it was like that, like my Siemens M55.

Please email me to if you have an L2 and can help me with that:

Mobtime Cell Phone Manager

After hours of frustration with the USB cable and countless, worthless drivers I just went out and bought a USB/Bluetooth dongle.
Installed the drivers for the dongle, right clicked on whatever I wanted to send to phone (photos, sounds, games, applications), "send to bluetooth device", connected the two and process complete.
Definitely worth the $30 instead of all the hassle.

Hi everyone, I tried a lot to get a usb driver for my L6 and after scratching my head for 3 days I nearly ended up without any hairs. I just got the driver and software which perfectly working for my cell. Please download the driver (P2K) and software (Motorola Phone Tools v4.04B) from the below link and unrar both the files. Attach the USB cable to your L6 it is an ordinary USB cable normally you can find it with your digital cams. After attaching to your phone your windows XP will detect Motorola L6 and ask for the driver give the path manually about the P2K and then install the Motorola Phone Tools. It will detect your mobile after searching for the phone and an image of your L6 mobile comes up on screen. Cheeers and if anyone needs help in this regard please send me an email at humxtum@gmail.com

Posted by: Jarnail Singh at August 20, 2006 04:26 PM

The link by alipo-op with a Mobtime Cell Phone Manager program seems good after you download it but nonetheless with the "bells and whisles" interface the program requires a registration code which had the program been legally bought would be about 25 american dollars. The link is a free demo that does nothing. If you want to spend money on a driver then I would recommend that program but if not the other sites are good alternatives
